Goals setting: A must for success

Posted on Mon, Nov 10, 2008

There is a saying that one who fails to plan, plans to fail. This is true because we live in a world that is full of cares, competing needs and aspirations. A goal-oriented life is more likely to lead to accomplishment than a life that leaves success to chance.

There is a saying that one who fails to plan, plans to fail. This is true because we live in a world that is full of cares, competing needs and aspirations. A goal-oriented life is more likely to lead to accomplishment than a life that leaves success to chance.

Stop and think! Even Jesus Christ in all His majesty and wisdom set a goal for His life and was consumed with the attainment of that goal regardless of obvious distractions. He said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” John 10:10, “ …the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many” Matthew 20:28   This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners1 Timothy 1:15

Thus, oppression, afflictions and barrage of injustices did not dissuade Him. Consider this: Jesus Christ: “Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:5-10 “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation?” Isaiah 53:7-8

Whatever you do, be it spiritual, family, business, education, finance, and physical fitness, etc., you should bind yourself to a goal. Certainly, your life must be characterized by goals-setting. And remember, it is not enough to set goals for your life; you must lay out step by step action plan for reaching those goals and stay focused as you work to reach  your goals. Read the Gospel of John and see the organization in the life of Jesus Christ, our leader. Beginning with His choice of disciples, their commissioning, to training, you will be amazed at how He conducted His business. Even at His trial; goal-setting played a vital part in His attitude toward death itself. Is it not astonishing? With goal-setting, He triumphed over death and left for us a great example with which to pattern our lives. Hallelujah! Jesus remains a Victor forever - in death and life.

Prayer is another essential element of goal-setting. Again, examine the ministry of Jesus Christ and you will see how effectual and fervent prayer lubricated the wheels of His goal. In moments when he was deserted, His strength came from prayer. If Jesus Christ for whom and in whom all things consist did not relent on prayer, but carefully sought God’s help in every situation, we who are limited in understanding and wisdom should much more travail daily in prayer and totally depend on God,  as we partner with Him to succeed in our goals. Stop and think!  “…in him we live, and move, and have our beingActs 17: 28 . Be blessed.
