In His flawlessness and glorious purity, He still stoops to ask you and me, in our filthiness to love Him. And when we respond, He avails us with His Spirit who cleans, nourishes, and presents us to Him “God” as beautiful brides. Stop and think! What earthly father loves like that?
When I received the assignment to speak in the church today on father’s day, I knew it was an invitation for me to appraise my role as a father. “My Father is consistently the best”, was the assigned topic. As a Christian, in and out of church, I know that I should be truthful. Thus, mirrored on God’s Words, I am not 100% a perfect dad. And I do not know if anyone is?
Earlier this morning, my children had showered me with assortment of gifts. Among them one with an inscription: “World’s Greatest DAD!!” which further complicated my feelings of inadequacy. Am I really the world’s Greatest DAD? To assure me that I was not being flattered, one-by-one, all three of my children took turns to convince me that I was indeed the best. Still, none of them had any idea of my assignment later in church. But I knew that by accepting to speak on the topic, I was putting myself and my family up for further scrutiny by God’s Word. Please join me and let us evaluate our place in the family as a father based on these indicators: A good father should be:
F - Forgiving
A - Available
T –Tolerant
H-Humble
E-Enabling
R- Reliable
Weighed on the scale of the above indicators, only God is faultlessly perfect. In His flawlessness and glorious purity, He still stoops to ask you and me, in our filthiness to love Him. And when we respond, He avails us with His Spirit who cleans, nourishes, and presents us to Him “God” as beautiful brides. Stop and think! What earthly father loves like that? Have you seen or heard of a forbearing father or mother who can match or out-perform God in these indexes? He is always tolerant of our perpetual sinfulness, giving us time to repent. Even when we hurt Him, He “does not change like shifting shadows” “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous”. Consider how He gave up Christ Jesus – the righteous- as an offering for our sins so that in Him we can obtain His eternal salvation. “For it became Him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to Glory, to make the Captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.” “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Are we perfect? No! We all have bodies that like to sin. “For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want”. Galatia 5:17. But must we continue in sins? No! But if we sin, we must remember we have an advocate – Jesus Christ – the Righteous. 1John 2:1. “He ever lives to make intercession for us transgressors.” God's eternal forgiveness does not negate the need to ask for forgiveness and cleansing, for conscience sake here and now when we sin. When we ask God for forgiveness, will He forgive us; and how many times? He will always forgive us and clear our consciences. "For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more" (Hebrews 8:12). Can we say this of ourselves or our earthly parents? No! “Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children” Ephesians 5:1. Only God, our father is consistently the best. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY.
